Circle of Security

What is it?

The Circle of Security Parenting (COSP) course is an eight-week, in-person programme designed for parents and caregivers of young children. It supports the development of secure, stable attachment bonds—foundational for emotional wellbeing and healthy relationships.

Decades of research show that attachment security helps children become happier, more cooperative, and better at problem-solving and forming friendships. It also supports emotional resilience and the ability to repair relationships after conflict.

Over the course of eight weeks, you’ll learn to recognise and respond to your child’s needs for both closeness and independence. When children return to us, they need comfort, protection, and help organising their feelings. When they explore, they need our encouragement, presence, and delight.

Parenting can be challenging—especially when children’s needs clash with daily routines. For example, your child may want to keep playing while you're trying to get them ready for nursery. These everyday moments can lead to conflict and frustration. COSP helps you understand and respond to these situations with greater confidence and compassion.

Who is it for?

This course is for parents, grandparents, and anyone with caregiving responsibilities for a child. It’s especially suited for those caring for children under six, though it has also been effective for families with older children.

All family structures are welcome—single parents, same-sex parents, foster carers, and more. If you care for a child, this course is for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during a session?

Each session begins with a check-in about your week and your observations of your child’s behaviour—whether they’re exploring or seeking comfort. We then explore that week’s topic using the COSP workbook, video examples, and group discussion. You’ll leave with simple, reflective activities to try at home.

What do I need to do between sessions?

You’ll be encouraged to observe your child’s play and interactions, noticing how the course concepts show up in real life. Children are, after all, the best teachers for learning how to parent them.

Can I bring my child?

This course is for adults only. We ask that children do not attend so that you can fully engage in the sessions without distraction.

Will there be refreshments?

Yes! Tea, coffee, biscuits, and cake will be provided—along with oat milk and other vegan options.
