Gathering Around The Fire: A Journey Back to What Matters
What calls us back to ourselves when the world feels too much?
For me, it’s always been the trees.
The deep-rooted oaks, the canopy overhead, the unassuming symphony of wind through leaves.
These moments bring joy, grief and grounding—but at times within my work I’ve lost touch with them.
In offices without windows, under fluorescent lights.
In institutions that prized logic over wonder, a wild part of me quietly went underground.
But, what if these silenced vulnerable parts are exactly what we need in the world right now?
In some roles I’ve deeply tucked away my instinctive, untamed self—the part that is woven with a deep interconnection nature. That part is making her way back, but she’s not alone.
As I’ve reconnected with my inner wild one, other parts have also surfaced:
• A sorrowful one that mourns the suffering of the world
• A shielding one who switches off the news, seeking refuge in not knowing
• A sharp, relentless critic who insists I haven’t done enough—and never will.
There’s also a part of me that longs to serve. She dreams of contributing fully—to the healing of people, ecosystems, futures not yet born. But she can strive too hard, spin too many plates, she can burn out. I’ve found myself in roles that mattered deeply—supporting those affected by homelessness, working for climate and social justice—yet sometimes I couldn’t stay. The cost was too high. My inner fire dimmed.
For me, that connection with the element fire—our purpose, our passion, our care—is what sustains our work in the world. But what happens when that fire is starved by systems that demand more than we can give?
It left me wondering:
In these times of unravelling- how do we re-gather around our inner fire?
How do we tend all our parts, so none are left behind?
Each day now, I try to sit around my own fire with all the parts within me welcomed.
The sorrowful part, the shield, the critic, my wild inner one—each with something to teach.
And beneath them all, something steady whispers:
Go to the wild places. To the plants. Let them re-source you.
And so I invite you to join me.
